Tales From The Helm: Stephen Mergens (USA) – “… the best destination in my opinion…”

My name is Steve Mergens, I’m from Virginia in the United States, and I’m here at the Seychelles Challenge.

I came to the event via a skipper in Cape Town that I’ve known for over 35 years. I met Robbie Dove in Cape Town and did some courses in Durban, and got my coastal skipper’s down there… Robbie gave wind of this race that was going to be happening, and I was all aboard.

I also invited a friend from Seattle in Washington, so I have a feeling we are the most travelled to this location!

Impressions of the Seychelles

It’s gorgeous! It’s by far the best island destination I’ve ever been to – and I’ve been to quite a few. I’m mostly a long distance sailor, doing deliveries across the Pacific and Atlantic, but racing is new to me.

I’ve had a blast. The people are wonderful. The location is wonderful. There’s a whole party atmosphere among the competitors… and the professionalism of the team of people that are putting this on is second to none.

I just can’t recommend this event enough to sailors who want to come out and enjoy the best scenery, the best sailing, and the best camaraderie that’s available in my opinion…

Stephen Mergens is part of Team Ocean Sailing Academy, racing a Beneteu Oceanis Clipper 361 Monohull.
